Black and White Wednesday

Welcome to my first new weekly post!

As you’ve seen, Black and White Wednesday is the newest addition to my categories, and it will consist of me posting a black and white photo every Wednesday – pretty self explanatory – though perhaps my motivation behind this weekly post is not. So, let me explain:

What most of you don’t know is that over summer last year I sold my guitar, and in a way I felt like I sold a piece of myself with it. I know that sounds really dramatic, but I used to sit in my room for hours on end strumming and writing away, searching for a melody and lyric that went together. I guess I could say I have music to thank for my love of writing, as lyrics and songs were the first kind of writing I ever did. So, naturally, having lost an artistic outlet, I needed to fill it with another.

I decided that as I had previously occupied myself with audible art, perhaps it was time to delve into some visual art. I did a bit of searching around and read some reviews and the next thing I knew, I had a gorgeous DSLR sitting in front of me, waiting to save me from my creative drought.

I am still very much a beginner when it comes to photography, though I have always felt that black and white is truth and honesty whereas colour is creativity and imagination. At some point I will get around to posting some colour photos, but right now I just want to focus on the truth, as it is something I have always struggled with.

I’d like to start off my Black and White Wednesday tradition with this photo of my dad that I took on his 60th birthday. He is sat on our front porch looking out onto the harbour. As posed as it looks, I promise to you that this was taken completely candidly – you will soon learn the detest I have for posed shots. Why is it truthful? To me this photo screams truth; it is a man coming to terms with his age, but not forgetting he is still young enough to have a drink. But I won’t say anymore so I don’t contaminate your own opinions. I give you, Black and White Wednesday:

  2. I love black and white photos, they do seem much more honest and truthful in a way.
    And I agree about posed images. It shows nothing about the subject, only the photographer. Which of course is sometimes the point, but usually, it should be about the spectacle not the spectator.

  3. I forgot to add that I love this image and the focus of it. It’s almost offsetting, and the blur of what seems like should be the main focus really emphasizes the idea of age that you mentioned.

    1. I really like what you said about the comparions of spectacle versus spectator – so true! Definitely going to consider that next time I’m photographing someone/something. Funnily enough the age idea came after I took the photo, but like you said, they act as inspiration sometimes. Thanks for having a look! 🙂
